Learning to Drive

Provisional Driving Licence

You need to apply for and receive your provisional driving licence before starting to learn to drive. To apply for this, visit the DVLA. Or you can obtain the form D1 from your local Post Office. It takes about 3 weeks for your application to be processed and for your licence to be sent to you - so if you want to start learning as soon as you are 17, make sure you apply early. (You may apply 3 months before your 17th birthday).

The Highway Code is essential reading for everybody learning to drive. It contains all of the rules and regulations that relate to driving in the UK. It is a good idea to read this and study your road signs before your first lesson.

The next step is to start your lessons - this is where we can help!! How many lessons will I need? This is a question we are often asked and a very difficult one to answer it can vary between as little as 20 hours (with lots of extra practice) and an average of 43 hours sometimes with extra practice sometimes without, very much depends on you personal ability.

The Theory Test

The Theory Test has two parts: the first is a multiple choice section consisting of 50 questions and you need to score a minimum of 43 to pass. The second part is a Hazard Perception test where you are shown fourteen video clips showing various hazards (one clip has two separate hazards) and you will score a maximum of 5 points for each hazard decreasing with the length of time it takes you to respond. The maximum score is 75 and the pass rate for learners must be at least 44. You will need to pass both parts to successfully complete your theory test. If you pass one part and fail the other, you will l fail the whole test, and will have to take both parts again.

The theory test is taken on very simple easy to use computers. You can buy a 2 Pack CD Rom with all the theory questions on one disc and a disc with hazard perception clips to help you prepare. This is produced by the DSA.

The theory test is taken at a separate test centre to the practical driving test and must be passed before you can book a practical test.

You can book your Theory test through the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) website or by telephone on 0870 01 01 372.

Lets assume you have had all your lessons and both you and your instructor agree that you are ready to take your practical test. You need to apply to take your test with your local DSA Test Centre. You can do this online from the DSA website or by telephone on 0870 01 01 372.

The Practical Driving Test

Before you do any driving you will be asked to perform an eyesight check and then be asked some vehicle safety questions. You will then be tested on your general driving ability, including two reversing exercises and maybe the emergency stop (only one in three pupils are asked to do this).

The 'Driving' part of your test will last approximately 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for evidence you have reached a competent and safe standard of driving.

You can make up to 15 minor driving faults and still pass the test, but 16 or more minor faults results in a fail. However, if you commit just one serious or dangerous fault, you will fail the test.

You must bring the following items with you to the test. If you don't, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) may refuse to carry out the test and you may lose your fee.

It is a good idea to also bring your letter of confirmation regarding your test time and date in case there is a query.

Driving Instructor Training

Training will be given by an ORDIT registered instructor. This means they have passed the official Driving Standards Agency examination to become ORDIT registered. Thus enabling them to be placed on a prestigious list of Instructor Trainers.

First and foremost, we are a driving school. As we continue to expand, we need and train new instructors all over the Sussex and Kent areas.

We spare no effort on our training, as the higher the quality of the training, the better instructors we produce. We believe you will not be able to find higher quality and commitment, and a guaranteed position with excellent career prospects anywhere else.

Driving Standards Agency Requirements

You must:

To become an ADI, you have to pass three exams, one theory and two practical. After passing your theory exam you have a period of two years to pass your practical part two and three examinations. The time taken will depend on your ability and personal circumstances. You can complete the course on average between four to twelve months, (there are examination timetables to be taken into consideration which are out of our control ).

The Theory and Hazard Perception Test (Part One)

The theory test calls for a high standard of knowledge, it is a computerised exam of 100 questions. For every question there is a choice of 4 answers. Only one answer is correct. You have 90 minutes to complete the test.

The questions are based on the following:
To pass the multiple choice test you must:

Results of the Theory test will be given at the end of the examination.

The Hazard Perception Test, consists of 14 video clips (one of which has two hazards), each lasting one minute. The clips feature various types of hazards, such as vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions. The earlier the developing hazards are observed and a response made, the higher the score.

Candidates score up to 5 marks on each hazard and the test contains 15 developing hazards. The pass mark for instructors is currently 57 out of 75.

The Driving Test (Part Two)

This consists of an eyesight test, questions on vehicle maintenance checks and your ability to drive - it lasts approximately 1 hour. You will also need to be able to read a car number plate from a distance of 27.5 metres.

This test is an advanced test and you will need to show a high standard of competence

You will need to demonstrate:

The test routes will include all types of road conditions, including motorways, town driving, dual carriageways, country roads and built up areas.

The Instructional Ability Test (Part Three)

The object of the test is to assess the value of the instruction you give to the pupil. The test is in two parts each lasting approximately 30 minutes. You must pass both parts of the test at the same time. You will be asked to instruct an examiner (who will role play) first as a beginner or partly trained pupil and then someone of test standard ability or a qualified driver.

The examiner will choose from 10 pre-set tests, covering the syllabus of learning to drive.

Candidates will be told of the result at the end of this test.

Trainee Licensing Scheme

After passing your Part 1 and Part 2 Examinations you will be able to apply for a trainee licence, after completing a minimum of 40 hours training. A trainee licence is not compulsory, but most people find it extremely helpful with their training. The licence lasts for 6 months and entitles you to receive payment for your lessons. If you choose to teach on a trainee licence you must take a further 20 hours training before taking your part three examination.
